CART register of approved drivers

In order to drive any vehicle of the CART fleet, a driver must hold a clean, current and full UK drivers' licence.  In addition, the driver must:

  • Be aged between 25-70

  • Have a D1 entitlement (licences obtained before 1997 should automatically have this category) or show that you have at least 2 years experience driving with a full licence.

  • Be MiDAS trained

Drivers should also provide details about any medical conditions, including defective vision not corrected by glasses or hearing loss not corrected by a hearing aid) that may affect their ability to drive.  Any group who wishes to use our bus on a self-drive basis must have a Midas Certificate, regardless of other driving qualifications.  CART will provide training for groups at a subsidised rate, please enquire further for details and dates.

What Is MiDAS?

MiDAS is the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme organised by the Community Transport Association which promotes a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training  of minibus drivers.  It is a membership based scheme that has been designed to enhance minibus driving standards and promote the safer operation of minibuses.

What is included in the training?

The course currently consists of three modules:

  1. On Road Driving Assessment:  This is carried out on a one to one basis.  Every driver receives a written copy of their assessment result, along with pointers aimed at improving their driving technique.

  2. Standard Training Module:  This is compulsory for all minibus drivers and provides information on responsibilities of a minibus driver, passenger safety, child passenger safety, defensive driving, personal safety and breakdown, accident and emergency procedures.

  3. Assessable Minibus Training:  This module is only compulsory for drivers who intend to carry passengers with mobility difficulties (eg, those travelling in wheelchairs).  However, all the drivers are welcome to attend.  This session covers the following areas:  Passenger awareness and assistance, wheelchair and passenger restraints systems and passenger lifts.

Drivers who successfully complete the MiDAS assessment and training session will receive a nationally recognised MiDAS certificate, have their names entered on the MiDAS register of drivers and will receive a copy of the comprehensive MiDAS Minibus Driver Handbook.
